Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Does a grain stove affect your insurance in Saskatchewan?

A. In most cases, Yes. Some companies are lower than others, and some do not increase your rates. It is up to you to check with your broker.

Q. Are your stoves CSA Approved?

A. Yes, they are CSA, ULC (Canada) and UL approved and have safety features.

Q. Do you clean your grain?

A. No, I like to keep it simple and burn what comes out of my bin. Our augers are floating, so the auger clearance is not so tight and the grain hopper is sealed.

Q. What kind of vent does it use?

A. There is a 6" inch pipe with a 3 inch pipe inside the 6 inch. The cold air from outside is taken in the 6 ", burned, then pushed out the 3". That way you only have one hole through your wall. The larger furnace needs a class "A" Chimney or optional power vent.

Q. How much does it burn?

A. It depends on a lot of different factors; how much area you heat, amount of insulation you have, time of year and other reasons. It can burn anywhere from 1/2 a bushel (30 lbs) to 2 bushels (120 lbs) a day (based on a Grain Comfort). Wheat and rye are the best to burn because they have one of the highest BTUs per pound rates.

Q. What does the furnace burn and is there a Clinker?

A. The furnace has a different, patented, way of feeding the cast iron burning pot. This means other grains such as barley can be burned and the clinker and ashes are pushed out of the pot.
